Growth Promoters
Background
Findings of steroids, ß-agonists and stilbenes in fattening animals may be evidence for the application of hormonally active substances to promote growth and therefore to improve fattening. They promote formation of proteins and thus muscular masses. For the protection of animals and consumers, growth promoters are banned in the EC under directive 96/22/EC. Thyreostatic drugs which promote growth by water retention are mainly used as growth promoters in young bulls. These thyreostatic substances are banned in the EC since 1981.
According to a report of the BVL (Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety) the frequent findings of 17-alpha-Boldenon, an anabolic steroid are not due to unauthorised application but to natural occurrence.
