Bisphenols
A Component of Many Consumer Goods
Bisphenol A and other bisphenols are used as monomers for the synthesis of plastics (e.g., polycarbonates, polyesters, polysulfones). As such, they are components of many consumer goods. Another significant application is the synthesis of epoxy resins, adhesives, and coatings, which may be part of food packaging. The use of Bisphenol A in baby and toddler drink bottles was banned as early as 2011. In cans and beverage containers, these coatings are in contact with food, so unreacted bisphenols or bisphenol metabolites can migrate into the food.
Another application is the use of Bisphenol A in thermal paper. Due to the ban on Bisphenol A in thermal paper in 2016, it has often been replaced with Bisphenol S in this area. Therefore, the entry of bisphenols via the paper cycle into packaged food remains possible.
Hormonal Damage to Humans and Environmental Organisms
In 2016, Bisphenol A was classified by the European Commission as likely to be toxic to reproduction in humans (Category 1B). As early as 2017, Bisphenol A was added to the REACH SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) Candidate List as an endocrine disruptor (ED) and defined as harmful to human and environmental organisms’ hormones. Since then, two other bisphenols have also been listed in the SVHC Candidate List for their endocrine properties.
Since 2022, the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) has been working on a group assessment for bisphenols. A total of 148 bisphenols have been identified, more than 30 of which may have potential endocrine or reproductive toxicity properties. Therefore, the ECHA recommends a group restriction for these bisphenols with similar toxicological properties.
