New Ban on the Use of Bisphenol A Enters into Force

Ban on Bisphenols

On January 20, 2025, the amendment regulation EU 2024/3190 prohibiting the use of Bisphenol A and other Bisphenols in certain materials under the Plastics Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 came into effect. As a result, certain Bisphenols and their derivatives can no longer be used. The previous specific migration limit for Bisphenol A of 0.05 mg/kg has been abolished. In the future, the corresponding Bisphenols must no longer be “detectable” in the consumer goods, with a methodological detection limit set at 1 µg/kg.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical compound commonly used in the production of plastics and resins, especially in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. It is found in everyday items such as food packaging, beverage containers, and coatings of canned goods. BPA can leach from these materials into food or beverages.

Health Risks

BPA is classified as an endocrine disruptor that can interfere with hormonal functions in the body. Studies suggest that BPA may be potentially linked to health issues such as infertility, developmental disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and an increased risk of cancer. Fetuses, infants, and pregnant women are especially vulnerable. The stricter legal framework aims to minimize exposure to BPA and similar substances, thereby reducing potential health risks.
